Protect Word
Lock a Word document so only people with the password can open it. It uses the same encryption as Word itself, so Word asks for the password on any computer or phone.

AES-256 with SHA-512, exactly what Word uses for "Encrypt with Password". It opens in Word on Windows, Mac and phones, in LibreOffice and in Google Docs.
Protect documents from any computer or phone, even without Microsoft Office installed.
Questions, answered
Documents saved as .docx (Word 2007 and newer), including macro documents (.docm). Old .doc files must be saved as .docx in Word first.
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device.
Open the document in Word with the password, choose File > Info > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password, clear the box and save.
The document cannot be opened without it, and nobody can recover it for you, not even us. Keep an unprotected copy if you may need it.
