Why use it

PDF to Markdown with ToolsCampus

Clean structure

Headings become ## headings, running lines become one paragraph, words split at the end of a line are joined again, and tables become | Markdown | tables |.

Ready for AI

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini read Markdown better than a raw copy from a PDF: the reading order is right and tables keep their columns.

Scanned PDFs too

Pages that are only pictures are read with text recognition. Normal PDFs are copied exactly and are not limited.

Questions, answered

PDF to Markdown questions

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?

Choose your PDF above. The converter reads every page and shows the text for checking; then click Download Markdown (.md) or Copy Markdown. No sign-up is needed.

What does the Markdown look like?

Short title lines become ## headings, paragraphs flow as normal text, short lines such as an address keep their line breaks, tables become Markdown tables with the first row as the header, and each new page starts after a --- line.

Can it convert a scanned PDF to Markdown?

Yes. Scanned pages are straightened and read with text recognition (OCR) before they are turned into Markdown. Check the words marked in yellow first.

Does it keep images, links and bold text?

No. It keeps the text, headings, paragraphs and tables in the right order. Pictures, links, colours and bold or italic text are left out.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes, on this page only. To read the text, the PDF is sent to our own server, converted in memory and deleted as soon as the conversion ends. It is never saved to disk, stored, shared or used for anything else. The Markdown itself is made in your browser.

Which languages can it read?

English, German, French and Spanish, including letters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, é, è, ç and ñ. Other languages written with the same alphabet, such as Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, usually work too. Arabic, Urdu, Hindi and Chinese are not supported yet. Text that is already inside a normal (digital) PDF is copied as it is, in any language.

Is there a limit?

Up to 25 pages and 20 MB per file. Normal (digital) PDFs are unlimited. Scanned pages take much more work, so each visitor can convert 25 scanned pages in any 24 hours, shared with our other OCR tools.
