Your password stays with you
The workbook is encrypted by your browser on your own device. Neither the file nor the password is ever sent to us.
Protect Excel
Lock an Excel workbook so only people with the password can open it. It uses the same encryption as Excel itself, so Excel asks for the password on any computer or phone.
Excel workbooks (.xlsx), up to 50 at a time
Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.
How it works
Why use it
The workbook is encrypted by your browser on your own device. Neither the file nor the password is ever sent to us.
AES-256 with SHA-512, exactly what Excel uses for "Encrypt with Password". It opens in Excel on Windows, Mac and phones, in LibreOffice and in Google Sheets.
Unlike sheet protection, which only stops editing, this password is needed to open the file at all.
Questions, answered
Workbooks saved as .xlsx (Excel 2007 and newer), including macro workbooks (.xlsm). Old .xls files must be saved as .xlsx in Excel first.
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device.
No. Sheet protection only stops changes and is easy to remove. This encrypts the whole file, so it cannot be opened, read or previewed without the password.
Open the workbook in Excel with the password, choose File > Info > Protect Workbook > Encrypt with Password, clear the box and save.
