Handwriting to Text

Handwriting to Text converter AI

Typing out handwritten notes takes ages. This handwriting to text converter reads a photo of your notes, a letter, a shopping list or a filled-in form with AI text recognition (OCR) and gives you typed text you can edit, copy into an email or document, or save as a Word file. It works best on clear, neat handwriting, printed or joined-up, in pen or pencil. It reads English, German, French and Spanish.

Why use it

Handwriting to Text with ToolsCampus

Pen or pencil

Shadows and uneven light are evened out before reading, so faint pencil and blue ink on lined paper read well too.

Check before you use it

Words the OCR was unsure about are marked yellow, so you know exactly where to look. Handwriting varies a lot, so a quick check is always worth it.

Many pages at once

Photograph a whole notebook section and get all the pages as one text, in order, ready to copy or save as one Word document.

Questions, answered

Handwriting to Text questions

How do I convert handwriting to text?

Take a photo of the handwritten page, or choose one you already have, above. The converter reads it and shows the text in a box; fix anything it got wrong, then click Copy text or download a .txt or Word file. No sign-up is needed.

Can it read cursive (joined-up) handwriting?

Yes, when it is reasonably neat. Clear printed letters read best; very small, crowded or messy writing gives weaker results, and some words may need correcting.

How do I get the best results?

Photograph the page from straight above, in good daylight, with the page filling the photo and no hand or shadow over the writing. Dark ink on plain or lined paper reads best.

Is my photo uploaded?

Yes, on this page only. To read the handwriting, your photos are sent to our own server, read in memory and deleted as soon as the conversion ends. They are never saved to disk, stored, shared or used for anything else.

Which languages can it read?

English, German, French and Spanish, including letters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, é, è, ç and ñ. Other languages written with the same alphabet, such as Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, usually work too. Arabic, Urdu, Hindi and Chinese are not supported yet.

Can it read maths, drawings or Urdu handwriting?

No. It reads words and numbers in the languages above. Maths formulas, diagrams and scripts such as Urdu, Arabic or Hindi are not supported yet.

Is there a limit?

Up to 25 photos at a time, 15 MB per photo, and 25 photos per visitor in any 24 hours, shared with our other OCR tools, because reading pictures takes a lot of work on our server.
